The Power of Listening: How Executive Vulnerability Transforms Performance
Sep 28, 2026For executive coaches, the beginning of a high level leadership engagement often involves overcoming initial scepticism. That was certainly true for one senior partner at a major consultancy firm, who was required to attend a corporate programme that included my coaching.
In our early sessions, he was polite but visibly resistant. Client deliverables were the absolute priority; coaching was viewed as a soft distraction. There appeared to be no clear entry point to initiate meaningful behavioral change.
The breakthrough came unexpectedly, on a chaotic roadside in Delhi. He called me with a backdrop of blaring horns, apologising because he was en route to visit his father in hospital. He then shared a far heavier piece of news: his wife back in Europe had also just been emergency hospitalised.
For the very first time, this exceptionally high performing executive felt completely lost and directly asked for guidance.
Our conversation shifted instantly. We moved far beyond corporate deliverables to discuss empathy, personal responsibility, and fundamental human priorities. He booked a flight home immediately.
The Return to Work: Exposing the Strategic Blind Spot
When we reconnected several months later, he returned as a fundamentally altered individual: far more open, deeply reflective, and fully prepared for honest self assessment.
He candidly admitted that he genuinely wanted to become a better leader, but simply lacked the internal framework to achieve it. The critical blind spot we identified through our dialogue? He simply did not listen, not to his corporate team, and perhaps more importantly, not to his family at home.
The initial behavioral experiment we designed was straightforward: practise total active listening with his wife.
One week later, he joined our scheduled video call laughing heartily, which was a absolute first. He immediately shared the startling real world results:
“James, after just two days of total active listening, my wife asked me if I was having an affair.”
Consider the weight of that statement. After three decades of marriage, just forty eight hours of truly hearing his partner made him feel like an entirely different person to the most important individual in his life.
The Foundational Leadership Lesson
That specific moment crystallised a profound truth for both of us: people instantly recognize and feel active listening because true presence is an exceptionally rare gift. Most professionals operate daily in high noise environments where they are rarely, if ever, genuinely heard.
This realization transformed his operational framework. It shifted his entire executive style away from a relentless focus on doing and toward an intentional focus on hearing. Today, he stands as one of the most thoughtful, people centred executives in his firm.
His evolution from a guarded, sceptical consultant into a genuinely transformational leader began not with a grand corporate strategy, but with a single moment of raw vulnerability and the discovery that deep listening is one of the most powerful interventions an executive can deploy.
If two days of genuine listening can instantly revitalise a thirty year relationship, imagine the profound impact it will generate across your leadership team, your key clients, and your overall commercial results.
