The Performance Gap: Why Your Success Habits Might Be Holding Your Team Back

A leader I worked with last yea recently received his employee engagement survey results. The data amazed both him and his organisation. To be honest, they didn’t surprise me.  The survey was independently administered, and the shifts were significant:

  • Engagement: Up 23 points

  • Leadership: Up 16 points

  • Culture and Values: Up 26 points

  • Overall Score: Up 19 points

They shared these results with me not because they had to, but because they wanted to celebrate the tangible shift in their workplace dynamic.

The Problem with "Success Habits"

The work we did together wasn’t complicated in concept, but it was deeply intentional.

We focused on identifying and removing the specific behavioural patterns that had served him well on his journey tobecoming a leader, but were now actively limiting his ability to lead.

This is a distinction that most development programmes fail to acknowledge.

The behaviours that make you a successful individual contributor—being the smartest person in the room, driving every detail, or providing all the answers—are often the very things that stifle a team.

Why the Gap Widens

Nobody tells rising stars that the rules change once they reach the top. As a result, old patterns stay. When a leader continues to rely on "doing" rather than "leading," the gap between their team’s potential and their actual performance quietly widens.

To close that gap, you have to be willing to ask yourself a difficult question:

"Which patterns got me to where I am today, and which of them are now getting in my way?"

Breaking old habits doesn’t mean you’ve failed; it means you are evolving to meet the needs of your team.
