The View from the Amateur Pitch: Why Survival Culture Kills Execution
Sep 14, 2026The View from the Amateur Pitch
I recently returned to playing amateur hockey. I am significantly older than the majority of my teammates, a fact the twenty year olds are remarkably consistent in pointing out. However, the physical demands of the game are not what I find most challenging.
Before every match, our captain delivers a team talk. He is a committed individual who cares deeply, and his volunteer leadership deserves genuine respect. Yet, the substance of these talks is almost always identical. The focus remains fixed on how strong the opposition appears, the necessity of our defence, and the basic requirement to survive the next seventy minutes. There is no strategic preparation, only pure emotion.
The result is palpable. I believe almost every player walks onto that pitch with the quiet, underlying belief that we are destined to lose. For the record, we have only won twice this season.
The Silence of Stagnation
The dynamic does not improve at half time or after the final whistle. The captain speaks, a couple of his close friends contribute their thoughts, and everyone else stands in a heavy silence. There is no collective reflection, no shared insight, and ultimately, no learning.
There is another player on the team, a Chief Executive Officer, who joins me in trying to inject a sense of positivity or an opportunity for growth whenever we can find the space. Unfortunately, those moments are far too few and much too brief to shift the momentum.
What I find most frustrating is not the act of losing itself. It is the wasted opportunity. Several of these younger players possess enormous natural potential. Week after week, the chance to help them grow, and to help us all evolve as a unit, simply slips away.
From the Pitch to the Office
I see this exact dynamic play out within professional organisations with startling frequency. Clients often share stories of leaders who dominate every conversation. They describe cultures that reward the act of speaking over the art of listening. These are environments where post mortems offer no room for genuine honesty and where talent quietly stagnates while leadership wonders why performance has reached a plateau.
The teams that consistently improve, whether on a sports pitch or in a corporate office, share one fundamental trait. They treat every single experience as a valuable opportunity to learn.
Mining the Gold in the Struggle
It is important to recognise that not every minor interaction requires a formal debrief. However, the moments where you are truly struggling are pure gold. They offer the most significant insights if you are willing to let them.
If you allow a culture of survival to take root, you are merely managing decline. If you instead choose to make your team’s identity one of continuous learning, the results will naturally follow. High performance is not a fixed destination, it is the byproduct of a system that refuses to let an experience pass by without extracting its value.
Tired of your brain turning neutral corporate moments into high stakes threats?
The most successful leaders are not simply harder workers. They are experts at managing the space between what happens and how they react. When you sweat the pause, you are not just losing sleep. You are burning the very fuel required for high level performance.
At EdgeEQ, we help senior executive teams dismantle the invisible, ingrained habits and low resolution headlines that cause strategic drag.
