The Settled Executive: Why Experience Doesn't Always Lead to Ease

The Expectation of Career Calm

A recurring theme within my work is the assumption that, by a certain milestone in a career, the experience of work and life should feel fundamentally different. Senior leaders often expect that, with enough tenure and success, they will eventually reach a point where they feel more settled, more at ease, and less affected by the pressures of their role.

When this sense of calm does not arrive, the assumption almost always turns inward. It is viewed as a personal shortcoming or a trait that should have been outgrown years ago.

The Problem with Personal Labels

Because these feelings persist, people often attach a fixed label to themselves. They might decide they are naturally anxious or perhaps not cut out for the highest levels of responsibility. This mindset quietly treats the issue as an unchangeable part of their personality.

What is rarely considered is that much of how we respond to specific situations was shaped long ago. These reactions often made perfect sense in the context where they first developed. However, there is frequently a missing connection between why those patterns formed and how they continue to influence leadership impact today.

The Power of Familiar Patterns

These internal patterns do not announce themselves with fanfare. They have been developed and reinforced quietly over many years, which creates a powerful sense of familiarity. They feel normal because they have always been there.

When similar professional situations repeatedly produce the same internal tension, it is easy to conclude that you are the problem. In reality, the issue is often something very different, and it requires an approach that goes beyond simply trying harder.

Beyond Capability and Intelligence

Feeling unsettled is not a reflection of a lack of capability or intelligence. It is not a flaw that can be corrected by sheer force of will or further study. Instead, it requires a fresh perspective on the internal systems currently at play.

More often than not, these are patterns that were never intended to be examined. They are simply still doing exactly what they were originally designed to do. Until these drivers come into clear view, they will likely continue to repeat, regardless of your level of experience or seniority.
