The Kitchen Table Paradigm: Why Leadership Is More Than Following Recipes

If you have to cook every day for a family, you will probably have a great understanding of why leadership is more difficult than it seems.

Anyone can follow a recipe. But when you have to cook for different tastes, conflicting schedules, limited time, and constrained resources, day in, day out, the challenge is never just the food.

It is the human element.

As humans, we all carry distinct emotional needs and limitations. Some we recognise, but the vast majority sit well outside our conscious awareness. Our brains habitually serve up what we like each day, and we unconsciously expect our teams to consume it, or at least pretend to enjoy it.

When they push back, we often label them as difficult, unmotivated, or resistant to change. We blame external pressures instead of pausing to consider what we might do differently, even when the outcome is not to our taste.

True leadership development is not about collecting another model or learning a brand new recipe.

Instead, consider these three steps:

1. Adapt the Presentation

Focus on making what you can already deliver more palatable to different working styles and emotional needs.

2. Expand the Palate

Gently encourage your team to step outside their comfort zones and stretch their capabilities, rather than staying locked in what feels safe.

3. Own the Climate

Stop blaming the diners for having preferences. Examine how the meal is being prepared and served.

Leadership in a large corporate environment is not about theoretical brilliance; it is about emotional dexterity under daily pressure.

What leadership recipe have you seen leaders rely on too often?
