Precision Over Information: Why Coaching is Not What You Think

The Reluctant Coachee

Most people do not wake up one morning thinking that they need a coach. This is especially true for those who are reasonably mature in age, successful, and have managed to work things out for themselves thus far.

That reluctance exists partly because the value of coaching is almost impossible to appreciate before you actually experience it. There are very few parallels in life for a process that does not add new information, motivation, or advice, but instead sharpens the way you already think.

The Analogy of the Handsaw

The closest analogy I have found for this process involves a simple handsaw. Most of us know how to use one well enough. You measure, you mark, and you cut. The job is eventually done.

However, it was only when a builder pointed out to me that the handle of a handsaw is cut at precise ninety degree and forty five degree angles that I realised something vital. The tool had always been capable of far more precision. I simply did not know how to use it properly.

Once you understand the hidden features of the tool:

  • Your cuts are cleaner

  • You work faster

  • You make significantly fewer mistakes

  • The entire job becomes far less stressful

Nothing about the wood changed. Nothing about the saw changed. Only my understanding of how the tool actually worked underwent a transformation.

Knowledge Versus Precision

This is how coaching operates at its very best. Most professionals already know a great deal about mindset, stress, leadership, emotions, and habits. There is a high level of familiarity through podcasts, articles, and years of lived experience.

The difference coaching provides is not more knowledge, it is precision. It helps you to understand the patterns your brain has built over time, how those patterns shape your emotional reactions, and how those reactions quietly drive your behaviour toward yourself and others.

Mastering Your Own Mind

Once those patterns are visible and named, you stop fighting yourself blindly. You begin to work with how your mind actually operates. Like that small detail on a tool you have used for years, the value only becomes obvious in the moments you need it most.

You feel the difference in a difficult conversation, under intense pressure, when stress spikes, or when the same issue keeps repeating itself. Coaching is not about fixing something that is broken. It is about finally understanding the tool you have been using your entire career.

Once you possess that understanding, everything you are already capable of tends to work much better. That precision is what takes you from the level of a hobbyist to a builder, then to a carpenter, and finally to true master craftsmanship.
