A recurring theme in my work is the assumption that by a certain point in a career, the experience of work and life should feel fundamentally different. Many professionals believe that once they reach a specific level of seniority, they will naturally feel more settled, more at ease, or less affected by challenging situations.
When this sense of calm does not materialise, the assumption often turns inward. It is frequently experienced as a personal shortcoming or something that should have been outgrown long ago.
The Trap of Internal Labelling
When the expected ease does not arrive, people often attach a label to themselves. Along with that label comes a mindset that quietly treats the issue as a fixed part of their character.
What is rarely considered is that much of how we respond in certain situations was shaped a long time ago. These responses often made perfect sense at the time they were created. However, there is often a lack of connection between why those patterns formed and how they might still be influencing professional life today.
The Familiarity of Hidden Habits
These patterns do not announce themselves. They have been developed and reinforced quietly over many years, which creates a strong sense of familiarity. They simply feel normal.
Consequently, when similar situations continue to produce the same internal reactions, it is easy to conclude that the problem must be you. In reality, it is often something very different, and it usually requires a completely different approach.
A Fresh Perspective on Progress
Feeling unsettled is not a sign of a lack of capability or intelligence. It is also not something that can be fixed by simply trying harder. Instead, it requires a fresh perspective.
More often than not, these are patterns that were never meant to be examined, yet they are still doing exactly what they were designed to do. Until they come into view, they tend to keep repeating, regardless of your level of experience or seniority.
